Privacy policy

Alerts for Good is a 501(c)(3) public charity that delivers public-safety alerts by text. This policy covers the information we collect when you visit alertsforgood.org or subscribe to an alert line, and what we do with it.

The short version

We collect the minimum we need to send you the alerts you asked for, and nothing we do not. We do not sell your information. We do not rent or trade it. We do not use it for advertising. Alerts for Good is free to subscribers, and we intend to keep it that way.

What we collect

From subscribers

• Mobile number. Required to send you alerts. We retain it only for the lifetime of your subscription and a short audit window after you unsubscribe.
• Zip code. Required to target alerts to the area you live or care about.
• Alert line selections. Which of our four lines you opted in to (Weather, Health, Community, Legal Aid).
• Message history metadata. Which alerts we sent you, and whether they were delivered. We do not record replies except to process STOP and HELP keywords.

From site visitors

• Server logs. Standard Cloudflare logs, which include IP address, user agent, and request timestamps. Retained for a short window for abuse prevention and debugging.
• Analytics. We do not run third-party advertising or behavioral analytics on this site. If we add privacy-respecting analytics later, we will update this policy and disclose what is measured.

Why we collect it

We use the information above for one purpose: to deliver the alerts you subscribed to, to confirm delivery, and to respond to keywords like STOP and HELP. Server logs exist to keep the site online and block abuse.

Who sees it

• Our SMS carrier. To actually deliver the text message, we rely on Twilio (and the downstream mobile carriers). They process your mobile number solely to route the alert.
• Our cloud host. This site is hosted on Cloudflare. Server logs sit with Cloudflare under their standard terms.
• Alerts for Good staff and trusted contractors. Only when needed to operate the service.
• No one else. We do not share, sell, rent, or trade subscriber information with data brokers, advertisers, or other third parties. We will only disclose it when legally compelled.

Your rights

Unsubscribe any time

Reply STOP to any alert to unsubscribe from that line. Reply HELP for a quick reminder of keywords and a link to contact us. You can also email info@alertsforgood.org and we will remove you.

California residents

California residents have rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) as amended by the CPRA:

• The right to know what personal information we hold about you.
• The right to request deletion of that information.
• The right to correct information we hold.
• The right to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. We do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising, so there is nothing to opt out of, but the right is yours regardless.
• The right not to be discriminated against for exercising any of these rights.

To exercise any of these rights, email info@alertsforgood.org. We verify the request, respond within 45 days, and if we need longer we will tell you why.

Other US residents

If you live in a state with its own consumer privacy law (Colorado, Connecticut, Utah, Virginia, and others), you have substantially similar rights. Reach us the same way.

Children

Alerts for Good is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13. If you believe we have, email us and we will delete it.

Security

We protect subscriber data in transit and at rest using standard industry practice. No system is perfect. We will notify affected subscribers of a data incident that puts personal information at risk, and we will notify regulators where the law requires it.

Changes to this policy

We will update this page when our practices change. Substantive changes will be flagged on the homepage for at least 30 days. The effective date at the top of this page always reflects the latest version.
